Diseases outbreak a concern

red-xPreventing the outbreak of waterborne diseases in flood affected areas is now a priority for the Red Cross.

Director General Alison Cupit says the Society is working with the Ministry of Health in a coordinated manner to ensure that those affected are also aware of the potential for the outbreak of diseases like typhoid and diarrhoea.

To assist with the clean up, Red cross has availed 500 pairs of rubber gloves and masks to the soldiers of the RFMF as they clear up the mud and debris.

5,000 hygiene packs will also be distributed to the most affected households.

Contained in a hygiene pack is antibacterial soap, towels and information leaflets on the importance of hand washing, HIV and AIDS as well as disaster preparedness.

In addition the Society will also provide mosquito nets, lanterns and cooking sets that comprise of a kerosene stove, cooking fuel and pots.

This phase of assistance is expected to cost the Society $80,000.
